PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Strand Center for the Arts is happy to showcase the work of bead embroidery artist, Christian Rodriguez, at their Artist Store in January. The store is located within the art gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh, NY and carries various wares of local artisans, crafters, and artists. Everything from handmade jewelry, to books written by local authors, ceramic bowls, mugs, and vases handcrafted by area potters is on display.
Christian Rodriguez finds inspiration for her work from her Puerto Rican and Native American heritage, using the traditional techniques from the ancient art of bead weaving and bead embroidery to create wearable pieces of art with an ethnic aesthetic. Most of her work centers on semiprecious gemstones encased in glass seed beads. Each seed bead is woven through using a needle and specialized thread multiple times to ensure the longevity of the piece. Metal embellishments are added to compliment the gemstones and give further strength and structure to the piece. Although, earrings, bracelets, and hair adornments are part of her portfolio over the past 10 years, she finds her creativity is best reflected in her large statement pieces, which are unique and expressive, but still fall within the realm of wearability.
In reference to her work, Christian stated, “Many of my larger pieces often require hundreds of hours to take form, which is why they never find themselves hidden in the dark confines of a jewelry box, but instead act as conversation pieces displayed in shadow boxes or on neck forms for all to see. Evoking colloquy over the work I have produced brings me great joy.”
This unique artist store and our gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, from 10:00 AM until 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m..
