Patina, oil, 12×12 by Joe Gyurcsak
Saranac Lake ArtWorks is pleased to announce the Awards Juror for the 2018 Adirondack Plein Air Festival: artist Joe Gyurcsak, of Hamilton, New Jersey.
In 1990, Joe left a successful illustration career to pursue a fine art path. “I had a born again experience as an artist when I first saw natural light on subjects in the open air. It changed my way of thinking and creating. I had made the leap into the plein air painting experience.”
Since then he has participated in the Door County Plein Air Festival, Bucks County Plein Air Festival, Plein Air Easton (the 2017 Grand Prize Winner), Gloucester, VA Plein Air (2017 Grand Prize Winner), the Forgotten Coast Plein Air Festival and others. He is a 5-time faculty member at the Plein Air Convention. In 2013 and 2017 he was awarded finalist in the Plein Air Salon Competition and in 2016 swept 3 awards. He is also featured in The 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic book.
Joe is a highly regarded instructor who has authored articles and lectured and demonstrated throughout the US at more than 140 major art institutions. He is the Resident Artist for Blick/Utrecht Art Materials as well as a member of the Salmagundi Club, International Society of Acrylic Painters, Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society and California Art Club. He has also published numerous articles and will be the subject of an upcoming Southwest Art Magazine article “Artists to Watch, 2018”. Learn more about the artist at JosephGyurcsak.com.
However, this will be his first time in the northern Adirondacks and Plein Air Festival coordinator, Sandra Hildreth, feels very fortunate to be able to welcome Joe Gyurcsak to the event. “Each year I’ve tried to select a qualified juror from a different part of the country, so their diverse experiences help keep our event fresh and exciting. Usually an artist specializes in 1 medium, but we get a real bonus with Joe – he is extremely proficient in oils, acrylics, and watercolors!” In addition to being the Awards Juror, Joe Gyurcsak will also be presenting a plein air workshop on Aug 11-12. “Capturing the Light and Atmosphere of the Adirondacks” is open to all artists, beginner to advanced. You do not have to be taking part in the Adirondack Plein Air Festival in order to take the workshop. It will take place outdoors at the Paul Smith’s College VIC. More information and registration information is available on our website.
The 2018 Adirondack Plein Air Festival will take place from Aug 13-18 in Saranac Lake. Artists will have 5 days of outdoor painting, followed by a Special Preview Party in the evening on Friday Aug 17, when awards are presented, and a huge, public Show & Sale on Saturday Aug 18.
