MURDER MYSTERY REHEARSAL: Members of the Grasse River Players – from left Karen Wells, David Weissbard, Erwin Selleck, Esther Katz, and sitting in front Art Johnson – prepare for a who donnit entitled “Murder on Rt. 56.” These talented local actors will be seen on June 18 at Robideau’s Mahogany Ridge Bar and Grill on Rt. 56 in South Colton as they present an original murder mystery written by local historian, playwright, and SUNY Potsdam Emeritus Professor Art Johnson. Who doesn’t like a good mystery? Take a mystery, add a delicious dinner, good friends, and the excitement of figuring out who was the murderer, and you’ve got a recipe for excitement.
This year’s annual Murder Mystery Dinner entitled “Murder on Route 56” is one of the fundraising activities presented by The Sunday Rock Legacy Project (SRLP). It will take place on June 18 at 5:30 p.m. Hosted at Robideau’s Mahogany Ridge Bar and Grill on Rt. 56 in South Colton, the mystery dinner has quickly become a favorite of locals and visitors alike.
Sharon Gotham, resident of South Colton, is one of many area residents who have attended the murder mystery in the past. She has been to two of the mystery dinners and recommends the event to others. “I think the fact that the actors engage the patrons at their comfort level makes the event fun.” Because newcomers may be anxious about what will happen, Gotham recommended that they “relax and enjoy” the performance. There isn’t any pressure to be involved. During the performance and while dinner is served, the actors circulate among the patrons in character and answer any questions the patrons have. That is designed to help the mystery goers decide who pulled off the murder. At the end of the evening, patrons vote for the person they think performed the murder, and any who make the correct identification win a prize and the admiration of the crowd. Gotham points out that the event also feels fairly short rather than feeling like a long, drawn out mystery.
As part of SRLP’s 2018 summer theme Get Your Kicks on Route 56, the Murder Mystery Dinner will again feature actors from the Grasse River Players. Mystery goers will enjoy an elegant dinner (entrée choices include Chicken Cordon Bleu, Pork Tenderloin, Pasta Primavera, or Maple Salmon), bread basket, potatoes, a vegetable, salad, dessert, and coffee & tea with the entertainment for $40 which includes tax and gratuities. A cash bar is also available. Reservations to this event are a must since only 50 seats are available! Interested parties should call 315-274-0351 to make reservations. The Mahogany Ridge Bar and Grill is located at 3927 State Highway 56 in South Colton. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The restaurant is handicapped accessible.
Also available at the murder mystery and in other venues leading up to the musical Pump Boys and Dinettes on July 19, 20, and 22, 2018 will be raffle tickets for a specially-designed quilt donated by Patty Blickwedehl based on this summer’s theme.
