Dr. Shapard has given numerous talks about Jane Austen to Austen societies and other groups and has undertaken several trips to England to study gardens, estates, and other sites on the tour.
English Heritage Tour with Jane Austen: General Information
September 3, 2019 – September 12, 2019.
The tour uses the lens of one of England’s greatest writers to explore some of the finest examples of English heritage. The first part of the tour will be in Bath, a UNESCO world heritage site. Bath was the leading resort in England in the eighteenth century and the city is still dominated by the beautiful Georgian architecture of that time. For the rest of the tour participants will travel to historic towns such as Winchester, Salisbury, and Portsmouth, whose extensive museum of the British navy includes large warships from several periods. Using the life and novels of Jane Austen as an inspiration, the tour will take travelers to old-fashioned villages, ancient churches and cathedrals, picturesque country walks, elegant eighteenth-century town buildings, magnificent country houses, and beautiful landscaped grounds and gardens. In keeping with Edventure’s mission of ‘Adventure Travel That Educates,” the trip will be led by Dr. Shapard. Travelers will benefit from his vast knowledge of the areas we will visit as well as his enthusiasm and his expertise in English history.
Can’t make the July session? There will be a second informational session, hosted by Northshire Books (424 Broadway, Saratoga Springs) on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at 6pm.
